cast dichroic glass panels in steel frameFive panels depict various oceanic scenes in bas-relief, highlighting the diversity of life in our oceans. In Aural Sea Life, Sinkus plays with scale and distance to shift perceived hierarchy - anchoring the assemblage of images are larger than life shells of clams, scallops, and snails, cluttering the composition as they do the sea floor. Flanked by the shells are images of two sea turtles, a lobster, and an octopus. These larger animals are lauded for their longevity, commercial value, and intelligence. Yet they appear small in this piece, emphasizing their reliance on the humble, simple creatures which feed the entire ocean.
This work is included in the exhibition Beneath There is Light, on view at The Glass Station Gallery from June 6-19
