Collection: Sam Stang
Sam Stang is a glass artist based in Augusta, Missouri, known for his vibrant, meticulously crafted works that blend traditional techniques with contemporary design. Over four decades, Stang has explored and expanded the expressive possibilities of glass, drawing inspiration from African trade beads, mid-century Italian and Scandinavian design, and the natural world.
Born in Northfield, Minnesota in 1959, Stang studied at Washington University in St. Louis, the Penland School of Crafts under Fritz Dreisbach, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts under Lino Tagliapietra. In 1992, after co-founding Ibex Glass Studio, he established Augusta Glass Studio, where he continues to produce all his work by hand, using only molten glass without molds, adhesives, or paints.
Stang’s practice includes intricate murrini and incalmo techniques, requiring precise craftsmanship and collaboration. His pieces capture motion, color, and form, reflecting both the disciplined traditions of European glassblowing and a dynamic, modern sensibility.
He has exhibited nationally at venues including the American Craft Museum, Smithsonian Craft Show, and numerous galleries and craft institutions across the United States. In addition to his studio practice, Stang has served as an instructor and demonstrating artist at institutions such as the Penland School of Crafts, Pittsburgh Glass Center, and Kent State University.
