Collection: Donald Carlson

Born in 1944 in Oakland, California, Donald Carlson has been working in glass since 1967.

Carlson holds multiple academic degrees: a Bachelor of Science (1966), a Bachelor of Art (1968), a Master of Science (1970), a Master of Art (1971), an MBA (1971), and an MFA in Glass (1972).

In 1966, Carlson was among the first to establish a private glassblowing studio in the U.S. Since then, he has produced over 60,000 pieces—each one signed, dated, and recorded.

His work is defined by clean lines, well-balanced proportions, and a disciplined approach to color. Until 2007, Carlson focused primarily on vases, bowls, and lamps. A studio accident led to the development of his popular cherry series, which introduced a more playful element into his body of work. His red glass has become a hallmark of the Carlson tradition. Red is one of the most complex colors to produce in glass, requiring strict control over numerous variables. Carlson has spent years refining both the chemistry and the process to consistently achieve a vibrant, consistent red.
